A New Friend, A Blessing

The web really makes many things possible. I remember I gave homework to my students last year. The question was too simple and that they had to email me their answer. The question was, "What Do You Think is the Greatest Invention in the World and Why?" I told them that there was no right or wrong answers. They can choose a simple thing as long as they will give a good reason for choosing that invention. The next day, I was surprised to see my mailbox with more than 50 new messages. So I started reading their answers. They gave a very good explanation for all their answers but most of them have the same answer. Many students think that the great invention in the world is the world wide web or the internet. They have different reasons for choosing this answer but majority of them said that the internet makes the world smaller and makes us keep in touch with family and friends. Yes, I definitely agree with all their answers. Some even mentioned that using the internet he was able to find a friend from another country and they still keep in touch through email and IMS. Now, I am too glad why the internet was ever invented. Human intelligence is such so great that things which we thought could not be possible before are now here. Many people enjoy the benefits of using the web. I am so thankful for this invention since I found my job here in China through the internet. But the most important thing is lately, I found a new friend which I consider to be a blessing. He's smart, thoughtful, sweet and humble(name it all). Thanks to this guy for contacting me via skype. Mi amigo...(FR)....thanks for being a real friend! Gracias!

A Teacher's Major Challenge

Teaching is such a great and interesting job that sometimes I don't feel that it's a job. I love this job more than any other jobs in the world. It's a job where I can be myself and enjoy the company of my students and see them improve in the areas that I am teaching. The most challenging part in my case is not in teaching or imparting knowledge to my students since it's not that difficult at all. My major challenge is the part where discipline is involved. It's not easy to be speaking in front of the class and see some students doing other things such as reading or sending sms, chatting using their mobile phones and some have the guts to sleep inside the class! At first I was so upset and thought that there was something wrong with me. So I asked some of my foreign co-teachers and other Chinese teachers if they experienced this situation. I am glad that I was not alone in the battle. They too have the same problem as I do. Some teachers even said that it's hard to understand the new generation. Sometimes we feel that students just come to our classes just because they are forced to attend classes but without their personal motivation to learn. They are in the class but are mentally absent. I think parents must help us in motivating these students to learn. I just find it too hard to teach when people already closed their minds about learning new things. When there's no self motivation, it's just like sailing against the current. The journey is too long and tiring. One thing I hate the most is the act of cheating just to pass the exam. Well, I was once a student too so I know that some students would really ask for answers. I have given some answers to some of the "bad boys" in my class during high school since I know that if I wouldn't do that they would do something bad outside the school. So, even if I only gave some answers to them, I still considered that as a form of cheating. Cheating because I allowed them to depend on me and because I didn't have the courage to stop them. Now, it happens again. I think cheating is everywhere, in every corner of the world where is it inhabited by the species called human beings. What makes me sad is that, people really have the tendency to cheat just to get what they wanted. I caught some students cheating and of course I confiscated their papers and asked them to leave. Yesterday, I was a bit scared of my student's reaction. He stared at me as if he wanted to throw something when I told him to leave the classroom. The rule is simple, they can only talk to me during the test, but it seems that this rule is so hard for them to understand. I may not speak Chinese but after 9 months here in China, I can say that I can already get some of the ideas when I hear them speaking. So basically I hear them asking answers and when one student would reply that I am near the other student would just say, "ting pudong" that means I can't understand them, but I did. So that hurts. Cheating right in front of me and even saying that it's okay because I can't understand. Though not every class did this. Some classes were very serious during the exam I could even hear a pin drop. But for some I just couldn't make them shut their mouth during the test. One thing I'm sure is that students are not scared of me. I also got an evaluation feedback from our Dean and he said I am a good teacher but I must also focus on discipline. I guess there's always a room for improvement. I hated my terror professors back in college so as much as possible I don't want to be like them. I don't want my students to learn just because they're afraid of the teacher. I thought learning would be more effective if the environment is more open and friendly, where everyone can express his own thoughts without painful criticisms. Where a teacher is not seen as someone who knows everything, but someone who can facilitate learning and be a friend to all. An ideal classroom for me me is where everyone can exchange ideas. Students would attend the class because it's a place where they can share and not just sit and listen to their teacher. I remember when someone asked me who among the US presidents I like the most, my answer was Abraham Lincoln. Everyone knows how he made a law that ended the racial discrimination in the US which of course was a great job. He also has written a famous letter to his son's teacher which you can always find if you're going to "google" it. (Well, I'm a fan of google, so I used the word). I tried searching it and many pages appeared. Here's a copy taken from www.wanderings.net. Although there are some issues whether the former president really wrote it. But whoever wrote this letter, this is a good one.

Lincoln’s Letter to his Son’s Teacher

He will have to learn, I know,
that all men are not just,
all men are not true.
But teach him also that
for every scoundrel there is a hero;
that for every selfish Politician,
there is a dedicated leader…
Teach him for every enemy there is a friend,

Steer him away from envy,
if you can,
teach him the secret of
quiet laughter.

Let him learn early that
the bullies are the easiest to lick…
Teach him, if you can,
the wonder of books…
But also give him quiet time
to ponder the eternal mystery of birds in the sky,
bees in the sun,
and the flowers on a green hillside.

In the school teach him
it is far honorable to fail
than to cheat…
Teach him to have faith
in his own ideas,
even if everyone tells him
they are wrong…
Teach him to be gentle
with gentle people,
and tough with the tough.

Try to give my son
the strength not to follow the crowd
when everyone is getting on the band wagon…
Teach him to listen to all men…
but teach him also to filter
all he hears on a screen of truth,
and take only the good
that comes through.

Teach him if you can,
how to laugh when he is sad…
Teach him there is no shame in tears,
Teach him to scoff at cynics
and to beware of too much sweetness…
Teach him to sell his brawn
and brain to the highest bidders
but never to put a price-tag
on his heart and soul.

Teach him to close his ears
to a howling mob
and to stand and fight
if he thinks he’s right.
Treat him gently,
but do not cuddle him,
because only the test
of fire makes fine steel.

Let him have the courage
to be impatient…
let him have the patience to be brave.
Teach him always
to have sublime faith in himself,
because then he will have
sublime faith in mankind.

This is a big order,
but see what you can do…
He is such a fine little fellow,
my son!

~ Abraham Lincoln

A Drop Out of School

Education is important and I still believe that our schools have done a great role in the formation of our minds. Though it is not the only place where one could learn new things. Nowadays, I believe that if one wants to learn things he can find many ways to help him achieve his goals. Many people, specially my parents believe that education is the only thing they can give and no one can take it. They are actually right. So even if they found it hard to support me in college both of them worked so hard because they could see a bright future for me. To show my gratitude, I did my best in my high school life and when I took the college entrance I got an excellent score so I was accepted as a university scholar in a Jesuit school. Being a scholar is a tough job, I had to watch all my grades all the time so I would not be kicked out. I didn't like studying after classes, so I would usually put my 101% attention during our class discussions so I could understand everything. I was not afraid to ask questions from my professors if I didn't understand something. I had great professors from different universities in the Philippines. My philosophy professor was a graduate from University of the Philippines, Diliman. My literature teacher was from Sto. Thomas University. Most of my professors had a PHD degree so they were so wise and open-minded. I like their teaching styles. I miss my college life. During my junior year my father died, it was when our final examination was coming. It was a big blow so I didn't think twice. I dropped out of school and went to another city to work, but the main reason was to FORGET. When I came back after 7 months I found out that the school is still willing to give me another chance. I failed in my major subjects since I didn't take the final exam. I failed in Organic Chemistry, I failed in Anthropology and Art(Failed in the scholarship office standard, but not in our college standard). If I would continue my major, which was General Science, I would still be a scholar but it would take 6 years to finish the course. I only needed one more year to finish my degree and I couldn't waste another year in school, so I decided to change my major. This time, it was not based on my ability, it was based on time. The shorter I could finish it the better. So I shifted to my weakest subject, English. It's not really that I'm bad in English, it's just that I didn't feel there's something new in it. I always thought that English is just a language and one can just learn it without spending 3 hours in class doing the S-V-0. Well, I was wrong, during my first term, I found out that I learned a lot and that I was not too conscious about grammar when I was in another department. Language is always changing is that there are many things in it. I learned to appreciate literature, but not so much on grammar. Some English classes were exciting, like we watched English movies after reading the books. I learned how to create things and make them appear real. I love poetry reading and writing. Going back to school was a good decision. I felt glad I decided to finish my course.
But dropping out of school didn't finish during my college days. I did it again in graduate school. I dropped out from my graduate school for 3 times. First, because I didn't like the research class, second because I was too busy at work (call center pressures) third time, when I got a job here in China. Until now I haven't thought about going back to finish my Masters in English Language Teaching. I still miss being in school, but I also think that I can still be successful without wearing that cap or writing a thesis. Someday, I can still do something that other people who dropped out of school did. It's just a matter of hard work and determination.
Stories of successful people who dropped out of school also inspired me.

Facebook is now Blocked in China

First I was so disappointed when youtube was blocked. Then later on I learned to accept things, since as they say "When in Rome do as Romans Do." I then turned to youku for music videos which was not really better compared with Youtube. Results are limited since it's a Chinese site and doesn't give much English contents. The next thing I knew was, blogspot was blocked next to youtube. That time I thought there were some online "writers" who wrote something negative about the government. So I understood. Then, I signed in to twitter for a diversion. After two weeks it was also blocked. Wow, so I imagined they would block every networking websites specially foreign sites. Now, what made me really sick and tired of their move is they now blocked facebook. What can I say, I expected that they would do this. What is strange is my proxy site can't open facebook but I can access blogspot just fine. This is really crazy...stupid or what more can I say? a baby? when are you going to grow up? People in China are not all Chinese and we don't want that our information and communication from the outside world will be totally blocked! Please help me understand them.

These are My Favorite Childhood Memories:

2. Swimming with my friends, from dawn to dusk specially on Saturdays Sundays.
3. Fireflies on some plants near the shore.
4. Fishing with my father.
5. Picking shells and diving to get some sea shells with my mother.
6. Crying because a crab has bitten my fingers.
7. Running away from a snake whom I accidentally stepped on.
8. Hunting with my brothers.
9. Playing marbles and rubber bands with my classmates.
10. Picking some small branches of trees for our firewood with my childhood friend.
11. Playing hide and seek.
12. Playing "patintero" under the moonlight.
13. Hanging around with my father when he and his friends would gather to talk and smoke together.
14. Helped my father set up the fishing net.
15. The first time I went fishing alone and caught many fish but when I decided to go home the wind was too strong that waves just grew doubled so I panicked and forgot how to maneuver the boat back to the shore and I lost all my fish when I jumped from the boat and swam back to the shore. I didn't realize that too many people were waiting for me and were scared that I couldn't make it. I thought of it as a matter of life and death but I was glad nothing bad happened.
16. Listening to my older sister and her suitor talking in our balcony.
17. Pretending to be asleep in the living room so my father would carry me to the bedroom.
18. Pulling grasses in our school playground before we were allowed to go home we should have a handful of grasses called "amor seko" it means dried love.
19. Sleeping in my teachers cottage.
20. Taking care of my garden in school because our teacher promised to give us a prize for the most beautiful garden, but she never did.
21. Having my mother chased me with a broom or coconut leaves for not coming home for lunch, I would usually spend all the days swimming when there were no classes. I didn't mind the beatings I love the water so much!
22. Going to town by boat to deliver some dried fish and when I went home the boat capsized so we all had to swim to the shore. Everyone in that community was good swimming so no one was hurt.
23. Selling homemade candies in school.
24. Listening drama from DYHP and real life love stories called "Handumanan sa Usa ka Awit".

Adios Mosquitoes

I was tired of seeing some traces of mosquito bites on my skin. I don’t see any mosquitoes during the day, so I thought I didn’t need a mosquito net. But I thought wrong, after a few nights I noticed more and more mosquito bites. I decided to do a general cleaning last weekend since we had four days holiday for Dragon Boat Festival celebration here in China. I just found one mosquito under my working table and I failed to kill it. I guess I’m not good in killing mosquitoes. After cleaning I decided to buy a mosquito net since I found out that my room was positive for mosquito. I wrote down the size of the bed so I could just give it to the sales lady. When I got into the store, I found two types of mosquito nets. There is this one without a stick and one with a stick. I couldn’t use the one without stick since I don’t have any post in my room where I could tie them. So I took the one with stick. It looks nice on the picture, a square sized mosquito net set on the bed. It looks like the bed of the queens in China before. The price was a bit higher than what we have back at home, where we can just buy a good mosquito net from 20-50 RMB. It costs me 75RMB which I didn’t include in my budget for this week. But anyway, I hate mosquitoes so I guess it’s worth the price. When I got back I was too excited to set it up. I open the bag took out the sticks, (2 separate sticks) connected with a string. I look at the picture again. I tried to slide them on the side of the net which has a place intended for the stick. After I tried inserting it to every side, I just couldn’t make the mosquito net stand upright as it should be. I found it too difficult to set up since I have never tried using this type of mosquito net. The one we have at home is too simple to use. Just tie the four ends to the corner of the room and it’s done. I tried working on it for almost an hour until I finally made it. After I set it up, I felt so tired that I didn’t think about going down to the school canteen to eat. I just laid down and sleep inside this beautiful mosquito net. I even didn’t turn off the television and when I woke up at 1:00 am I was surprised that someone was speaking Chinese in my room. I thought I was somewhere, I couldn’t remember, but when I turned around I saw CCTV 1. I felt guilty that I wasted so much electricity for about 5 hours. But I was glad I could say, “Mosquitoes, get away from me!”
